Chapter 24

A sudden dearth of Bibles struck the nations of the world. The government shut down Bible publishers and burned their stock; they raided bookstores, both brick-and-mortar and online retailers, any entity that sold Bibles. By the first week of February, a hard-copy Bible was worth a fortune on the black market.

Every online Bible site disappeared. Google Play and the Apple App Store discontinued their Bible apps. If your phone was connected to the internet, your downloaded Bible app vanished.

The nanomites returned the Bible apps to the app stores and the devices that had previously downloaded them; just as quickly, they were again removed. The daily tug of war between the nanomites and the monolithic app stores continued for weeks before the nanomites, their worldwide resources already stretched to the breaking point, inserted code into the stores’ programming, code that restored the Bible apps every ten minutes.

We have many irons in the fire and fish to fry, Jayda Cruz, Zander Cruz. We will keep the Bible apps on your devices, but we must not neglect the explicit activities Jesus himself gave us.

In a coordinated assault the following week, Bible-teaching churches in New Mexico lost their ability to stream live services or post recorded messages. Ten days later, not one Bible-teaching church or pastor in America could broadcast the Gospel . . . except Zander.

Zander Cruz, we are able to livestream your messages directly to any cellular or internet signal-receiving device. Moreover, we can send notifications of impending livestream messages to these same cellular or internet signal-receiving devices, giving everyone opportunity to listen to God’s word as you teach it.

“Wait. To all cellular or internet devices? All as in all?”

Yes, we and our army of nanoarrays can reach all active and connected devices. We can also guarantee that no attempt to interrupt your livestream or locate the broadcast origination site will succeed.

Zander’s brow creased. “Fat lot of good that last will do since I’m a known quantity here in Albuquerque. Finding our home address will take about ten seconds. We’ll be fending off torches and pitchforks by nightfall.”

Zander Cruz, we have evaluated the danger of continuing to broadcast your sermons, taking into account the very real likelihood of reprisals toward you and your family. We believe we have the necessary solutions.

“What might they be?”

Zander Cruz, we will alter your appearance and voice while we livestream your messages. If you refrain from using verbal identifiers such as DCC, your name, or your city, no one will know who is broadcasting. You will be unknown to all who watch.

“Soooo, in the same way you make Jayda look different from Gemma, you’ll make me look different?”

Yes, Zander Cruz. We will alter your facial structure, hair and eye color, and all aspects of your voice—tone, pitch, cadence, and accent.

I waited as Zander turned over this information in his head, studying it from all angles.

Finally, he said, “That sounds like a great plan, Nano, but we still have a few holes to plug. Specifically, I’m wondering how we manage the co-op members who don’t know about you.
